A Will in the United Arab Emirates – Why Is It Essential for Every Expat Who Has Assets or Family Here?

We often come across many advertisements on social media that sometimes provide conflicting information. In the UAE, only licensed lawyers, legal consultants, notaries, and DIFC-registered Will Draftsman professionals are authorised to prepare and submit a valid will.

A large number of expatriates living in the United Arab Emirates are still unaware that, without a will, their assets — property, bank accounts, company shares, savings — will not automatically pass to their family members or chosen beneficiaries. Instead, distribution may take place according to the applicable Sharia inheritance rules.

This can often lead to:▪️ outcomes completely different from what the deceased would have wanted▪️ female relatives or more distant family members being excluded▪️ disputes and lengthy legal procedures▪️ uncertainty regarding the guardianship

of minor children

A professionally drafted and registered will is the only tool that ensures:-- your assets are distributed exactly to the individuals you designate-- the temporary and permanent guardianship of your children is clearly defined-- your assets in the UAE and abroad are coordinated and handled consistently-- your family avoids unpredictable, time-consuming, and costly procedures-- your wishes continue to be respected even when you can no longer express them

A will is not a privilege for the wealthy — it is essential for every family living, working, purchasing property, or operating a business in the UAE.
